Inventory of the MHO Landscape
Monitoring systems for MHO development
The monitoring of MHO development in West Africa is one of the main activities of the Concertation. Different tasks are carried out to monitor MHO development: inventories, case studies, synthesis, capitalization studies, etc.
Three initial inventories were carried out in 1998, 2000 and 2003. They enable the Concertation to keep track of the evolution of health mutuals and their members and practices in the countries covered. See the reports of these inventories
Since 2007, the Concertation has improved its monitoring by strengthening its tools in order to:
- Produce basic, on-going information made immediately available to health mutuals, supporting organizations, national authorities, researchers, etc
- Produce detailed periodic information on major experienced health mutuals
- Document practices in specific areas such as the collection of premiums, linkages with micro-finance, etc
- Integrate this follow-up system for health mutuals in Africa with a global inventory of health micro insurance systems. GIMI
To obtain these objectives, the follow-up combines:
- A permanent inventory (annually) through an online questionnaire completed by health mutuals or their supporting structures (NGOs, cooperation programmes), etc.). permanent inventory
- A periodic study (every 2 years) for large health mutuals, presenting a significant level of organization and benefits, and having the capacity to produce detailed information concerning their function and services.
- A qualitative study on topics related to the development of health mutuals in each country covered by the Concertation.
